Purdue University
Under the authority of the National Defense Act of June 3, 1916, a senior unit of the Reserve Officers Training Corps was organized during the school year of 1917-1918.  ROTC was suspended from June 30, 1918 to January 1, 1919 to make way for the Student Army Training Corps under the auspices of the Committee of Education and Special Training of the War Department.  During World War I, 3,868 Purdue students, graduates, and faculty members were in the service.  The Armory, which is still used today, was completed in 1918 at a cost to the University of $200,000.
