Durning WWI he served with the Army Medical Corps as an expert examiner of the heart and lungs.

He attended Officer's Training School at Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN, and was commissioned 1st Lieutenant, 1 Apr 1917.

He was called to active duty a short time later and served at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Camp Taylor, KY, Ft. Dix, NJ, and Ft. McClellan where he was discharged on 30 Jan 1919 with the rank of Major
